Vegan Pizza Options
Pizza night is a night we can all look forward to. The reason pizza is so inclusive is because of the diversity in the way it’s made. Gluten intolerance? No problem, we’ll use a gluten free base. Lactose intolerant? Never fear, arrangements can be made to use a cheese substitute.
This versatility doesn’t stop there, ingredients can be mixed and matched to create a pizza personal to the person. This comes in particularly handy if you have pizza night guests that are vegetarian or vegan.
Swapping the pepperoni for grilled peppers and finishing with vegan parmesan means your meatless mates don’t miss out. There are plenty of options to keep it interesting, and here are a few of our favourites.
Vegan Pizza
The biggest obstacle you face with a vegan pizza is the cheese. Pizza just doesn’t seem like pizza without that thick, stringy mozzarella hanging between slices and bites. There are options available to combat this conundrum.
There are many plant-based alternatives to these cheese days . . . cheese these days. It is even possible to get vegan mozzarella, so you shouldn’t be left short of options. Vegan parmesan should be in everyone’s kitchen cupboards. Vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or carnivorous caveman, it is extremely tasty.
Pro tip – You can make your own vegan parmesan by blitzing raw cashew nuts, nutritional yeast, sea salt and garlic powder.
As for toppings, go wild with the veg. A sauteed medley won’t go a miss and will really pack in some flavours. The aroma from sautéing before adding to the pizza will be enough to lure the meat eaters from the dark side and once finished off in the oven with the rest, makes a pizza to die for.
Vegetarian
With the humble vegetarian, cheese is back on the table. If you’re attempting to woo a meat eater with your vegetarian option, to make things a little more interesting, try adding some sliced almonds. They add a very distinct flavour that goes really well with the cheese, but also a crunch for a more wholesome texture.
Other creative considerations for the vegetarian pizza we like are thinly sliced potatoes, cauliflower, kale and caramelized onions. Again, pizza is so versatile and flexible, the possibilities are endless. A vegetarian pizza should be less about replacing meat, and more about finding the perfect combinations of flavour for your feast.
